Abstract

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are essential to the development of the Indian economy, contributing significantly and critically towards generating employment, industrial output, and exports. In recent years, digital integration has been a game-changer for the path of functioning and growth of MSMEs. The escalating use and adoption of digital technologies for several objectives, including e-commerce platforms, digital payment systems, cloud-based accounting software, and online marketing strategies, has created an opportunity for small businesses to explore and open themselves in new markets. From this small business are not restricted to their local boundaries but are also available for national and international areas too. Government initiatives such as Digital India and policy measures of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, are helping the ecosystem of MSMEs to move towards digitalisation in India. This paper has analysed the scope of growth opportunities that are created in the process of digital integration, such as improved competitiveness, financial inclusion, cost efficiency, and more extensive customer outreach. At the same time, it highlights structural challenges like a lack of digital literacy, poor infrastructure, cybersecurity concerns, and financial constraints restricting the use of the full opportunities the digital world offers. Based on secondary data of government reports, policy documents and already existing literature, the study applies an overall analytical overview of the evolving digital setting of the MSME sector. The findings suggest that though digital integration has a great potential to support the growth of MSMEs, the extent to which it can do so is dependent to a large degree on supportive institutional mechanisms, better digital infrastructure, and targeted capacity building initiatives. The paper concludes by offering some policy recommendations to improve digital readiness and ensure inclusive and sustainable development of MSMEs in India.
